Barrier Matting - Open or Closed?

Barrier Matting - Open or Closed?

You may have noticed that we provide the option of specifying either open or closed construction barrier (entrance) mats. The difference?  Let us explain...

Open Construction

Open construction incorporates spaces between each wiper, which allows dirt and moisture to fall through into the matwell below, the mat can be lifted intermittently to remove the debris, as well as for deep cleaning the mat itself.

Open construction with PVC wipers is ideal for external areas as rainwater, dirt and leaves etc will fall through the mat into the matwell reducing slip accidents.  Open construction mats when used externally should always be used in conjunction with a good drainage system.

Closed Construction

If you specify closed construction, dirt and moisture will remain on the surface of the mat, which can be removed by regular cleaning, but must still factor in additional periodic deep cleaning of the mat itself.  Closed construction is ideal for internal applications.
