How Big Should An Entrance Mat Be?

Barrier matting isn’t just a finishing touch it’s a frontline defence. Knowing how big an entrance mat should be is an important part of the specification. Below is a quick guide to understanding how much entrance matting to specify.

Width and Length of Matting

Width - Matting should cover the entire entrance of a building, including side entrances, ensuring all foot traffic must pass over the mat before entry.

Length (Going) - Critical to the mat’s functionality, the required length will vary depending on the volume of foot traffic and peak times of flow. A longer mat allows for more effective removal of dirt and moisture.

Guidance - HSL (Health & Safety Laboratory) and EFSA (Entrance Flooring Systems Association) recommend mat lengths based on peak hourly flow rates.

Consider your traffic levels

Traffic Volume

Crossings per Day

Traffic Level

Typical Locations

Very High

>5,000

Heavy

Railway stations, stadiums, airports, shopping centres, large hospitals, supermarkets

Moderate

>500

Medium

Offices, hospitals, schools, high street shops, hotels

Note: ‘It is not always possible to fit the correct amount of primary barrier matting - in these circumstances extending the amount of matting by using a secondary barrier mat will provide an ideal solution’

Layered Protection Works Best

Gradus recommends combining Primary and Secondary, matting systems for optimal results:

Primary Matting (e.g. Esplanade 5000): Handles heavy foot and trolley traffic at main entrances.
Secondary Matting (e.g. Boulevard 5000): Adds extra moisture and dirt retention deeper into the building.

Volume & Type of Traffic

When selecting entrance matting, consider how often people enter and exit the building throughout the day—especially during peak times like breaks, opening/closing hours, etc.

Typical Types of Wheeled Traffic

The weights listed are per wheel and help determine the durability requirements of entrance matting.

Medium

Other Factors to Consider

External Environment

The area outside the entrance can significantly impact mat performance. Key considerations include:

·       Surface type: Turf, grass, or other soft landscaping adjacent to the entrance

·       Exposure: Entrances that are fully exposed vs. those protected by canopies or overhangs

Multiple Entrances

Different entrances may require tailored matting solutions:

·       Main entrances: Often need more robust, aesthetic solutions

·       Service entrances: May benefit from more functional, heavy-duty matting

Lighting & Visual Effects

When specifying aluminium entrance mats—especially in areas with glass atriums or strong lighting—visual harmony is essential:

·       Avoid: Silver/mill finish aluminium combined with dark wipers, which can cause visual distortion or strobing effects

·       Recommended: Black anodised aluminium paired with black wipers to minimise visual interference and maintain a sleek appearance
