Contract interiors specialist Gradus has extended its Xtra-grip range with the launch of Xtra-grip Plus, a new stair edging insert suitable for use in catering and food preparation environments, designed to help reduce the number of slips and falls on stairs.

Installed using a special high performance adhesive, the Xtra-grip Plus insert incorporates mineral aggregates to increase surface friction, which in turn provides improved slip-resistance in both dry and wet interior conditions, subject to regular cleaning.

‘Dry’ interior stairs and steps in kitchens can easily become ‘wet’, either through contamination from moisture and condensation transferred from fridges and storage areas, from the spillage of food and drinks, or the build up of grease, creating a serious safety hazard that is often overlooked.

Xtra-grip Plus has achieved the same results and wear classification as Xtra-grip, after being independently tested for slip-resistance by the Health & Safety Laboratory. Xtra-grip Plus has been proven to offer a ‘low risk of slip’ in both wet and dry interior conditions, giving test values that far exceed the minimum requirements. In addition, independent wear tests by SATRA have given Xtra-grip Plus a classification of Group T, Classes 34 and 43, meaning that it is suitable for ‘very heavy’ use in commercial environments, and ‘heavy’ use in light industrial environments.

Xtra-grip Plus is offered for use in the Gradus XT, aluminium, bronze, chrome and PVC-u Hardnose stair edgings, in a choice of 11 colours, providing specifiers with a comprehensive colour and design choice to suit all interior design requirements.

Commenting on the launch of Xtra-grip Plus, Gradus Accessories Product Manager Rachael Robertson said: “The popularity of our Xtra-grip insert has led to the development of an equally effective insert for food preparation areas.

“With over 100,000 injuries reported on non-domestic stairs each year (according to figures produced by the HSE), owners and occupiers of public buildings are constantly looking at ways to improve the safety of their buildings. Accidents in food and catering environments are a serious issue for any organisation. By using Xtra-grip Plus on interior steps and stairs that are at risk of becoming wet, building owners and occupiers, as well as flooring contractors can achieve peace of mind on this aspect of stair safety.”
