GRADUS IS A PERFECT FIT FOR EXETER’S NEW-LOOK COURT

20 October 2005

An extensive range of barrier matting, carpet and stair edgings from Gradus have been fitted throughout Exeter’s new-look Crown and County Court, as part of a £23.75million PFI project, to bring the court into the 21st Century.

The court was moved from Rougemont Castle, a Grade II listed court building, to a new, state-of-the-art centre in Southernhay because the former building could no longer provide for the needs of a modern court service. By specifying Gradus products for all the barrier matting, carpet and stair edging requirements of the new 8000sqm building, contractors Alfred McAlpine benefited from a centralised supply point.

Life-cycle costings was a major consideration for Exeter Court, therefore Alfred McAlpine specifically required durable flooring solutions to reduce lifetime maintenance and replacement costs, while still meeting the aesthetic needs of the neutral interior décor of the court.

To meet the court’s carpet needs, Alfred McAlpine required a durable, solution dyed carpet tile with a small design, which was cost-effective to install. As a result, Gradus Aera Element carpet tile was selected in grey, for all four crown courtrooms, the civil courtroom and four district judges’ hearing rooms, together with 3000m Gradus ‘Flair 950’ printed carpet tile, which boasts a colour co-ordinated black and grey dotted design, for all office areas and corridors. Both solution dyed nylon carpets are designed to withstand continual foot traffic, necessary for the busy court, therefore increasing product lifecycle expectancy.

Gradus Access barrier matting with Boulevard 6000 inserts was specified for the main entrance to the court (in grey rubber) and the emergency exit (in black rubber). Access was provided to offer lasting protection against the problem of walked in dirt, soil and moisture and help maintain the performance and appearance of adjoining flooring.

Elite Hardnose stair edgings, with a Black channel and slip resistant PVC Storm inserts, were also installed to contribute to safety requirements in the court by defining the edge of each step and helping to reduce slip accidents. Both the barrier matting and stair edgings offered additional benefits on site to flooring contractors S Smith & Sons Carpets, as the products were quick and easy to install, allowing significant labour time and cost savings to be made.

Gradus offers a comprehensive range of flooring accessories, barrier matting, wall protection, contract carpet collections, upholstery and soft furnishings fabric ranges to meet the diverse aesthetic and performance requirements needed by specifiers, contractors and the end user.
