Contract interiors specialist Gradus has installed high performance primary barrier matting in the entrance to an award-winning medical building and architectural landmark at Queen Mary, University of London.

The Blizard Building accommodates 400 cell and molecular research scientists on a single research floor, equivalent in size to a football pitch and the largest of its kind in a UK university. Also used as a seminar and reception area, the glass-walled building was honoured at the 2009 International Architecture Awards for its pioneering open plan design, suspended ceiling pods and its innovative use of artwork, lighting and colour.

Gradus’ Esplanade Plus primary barrier matting with Boulevard 5000HD insert in Jackdaw was installed in the building’s busy main entrance to prevent dirt and moisture from being carried into the building, reducing the risk of slip accidents and protecting adjoining floorcoverings, lowering maintenance and cleaning costs.

The Projects Office at Queen Mary, University of London, said: “The main entrance to the Blizard Building is in constant use, so we needed a hardwearing matting solution that would create a safe, accessible and low-maintenance environment. Esplanade Plus is durable, highly effective and in keeping with the building’s stylish interior.”

Caroline Davies, Matting Product Manager for Gradus, added: “Esplanade Plus primary barrier matting is designed for use in environments subject to heavy foot and trolley traffic, making it ideal for universities, shopping centres and hotels.

“The Blizard Building is at the forefront of cutting-edge architecture and our Esplanade Plus primary barrier matting makes a practical and attractive contribution to its distinctive design.”

Esplanade Plus is available in either open or closed construction in a variety of colours, offering solutions for a variety of different environments.
