GRADUS INSERTS SAFETY INTO KING STURGE OFFICES

04 April 2008

Innovative XT stair edgings from contract interiors specialist Gradus have been installed in the South West regional head office of leading independent property consultants King Sturge.

One of the largest property consultants in Europe, King Sturge’s impressive Bristol office offers a commercial and residential agency, asset management, building surveying and project management service. The elegant building in a Georgian square, set close to the city centre, occupies one of Bristol’s most prestigious locations.

Gradus XT stair edgings were fitted onto the office’s main four-storey staircase, providing improved safety by reducing the risk of slips, trips and falls. In line with Approved Document M (ADM) of The Building Regulations 2000, Steel (grey) inserts were used to provide visible contrast with the dark blue floorcovering, helping to define the step edge and contributing toward the creation of an inclusive environment, as set out in the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).

Supported by the latest recommendations from BRE, the XT range comprises aluminium channels and slip resistant inserts that extend around the leading edge of the stair edging, maximising safety underfoot by ensuring optimum foot contact with the slip-resistant element of the stair edging.

The XT range is supplied with a choice of high performance interior inserts, which are fixed to the channel using Gradus Fusion adhesive technology, providing a bond for life between the insert and the channel. This is at the heart of delivering peace of mind to the specifier and building owner that they have selected a product that will perform throughout its life.

Senior Associate with King Sturge, Gaza Cross, comments: “When specifying the stair edgings for our busy office environment, it was important to take into account the relevant safety issues affecting staircases, such as slip and trip risks. By choosing XT stair edgings, it was possible to select a contrasting colour to the surrounding floorcovering and the advanced safety features meant trip hazards will be reduced, creating peace of mind for staff and other building users.”

Lynette Bowden, Marketing Manager for Gradus Accessories, adds: “By installing high performance stair edgings, such as those from our XT range, King Sturge is displaying the high level of duty of care towards their employees and visitors that is required in all public buildings.”

The XT range offers 55mm treads and both 40mm and 55mm risers, in line with the guidance in ADM and contributes to the provision of an inclusive environment, as set out in the DDA. The range is available with a choice of 11 coloured inserts to provide visual contrast with surrounding floorcoverings and includes profiles to accommodate various step shapes.
